In the north of the paradise island Mauritius, nestled in the bay, lies Grand Baie, with a population of almost 12,000 people. As one of the most popular tourist regions, Grand Baie has a lot to offer. Next to a range of shops, restaurants, bars and beaches, also the cultural and religious charm are not lost here. Because of this broad range of activities, Grand Baie is a popular meeting place for locals and tourists, young and old, as well as pleasure seekers and party lovers.
In Grand Baie countless accommodations are offered, in different categories, from private- to luxury accommodations with direct access to the beach. These are available as part of a package holiday via the internet and in some cases only on direct request on site and are subject only to their capacity and availability. Thanks to the good infrastructure, almost all shops, restaurants, bars, etc. are easily reachable by bus, taxi or car rental and some even by walking.
Beaches of Grand Baie
Grand Baie Public Beach
Grand Baie Public Beach is located in the center of Grand Baie, right on the main road. The public beach of Grand Baie does not necessarily represent a dream beach and serves primarily as a berth for the local fishing boats. Here you can buy at certain times freshly caught fish on the small offshore market. However, in my view, the bathing is possible, yet not indispensable. Grand Baie public beach is more suitable for a short stay after an exhausting shopping tour, with a glass of freshly squeezed juice and a small local snack at one of the many snack stands.
If you follow the main road towards Pereybere, after a few minutes, you will find a sign that points the way to La Cuvette beach. La Cuvette Beach comes a little closer to the idea of a ”dream beach” and after walking on a stony path you will find some idyllic coves. At La Cuvette you can easily spend a day at the beach. There a various water sports offered and furthermore La Cuvette is the starting point for an ”Underwater-Sea-Walk”. Swimming, snorkeling, relaxing and other beach activities does not constitute a major challenge here.
Activities in and around Grand Baie
Close to the public beach, located at Sunset Boulevard, is the port of Grand Baie. From here, numerous catamaran tours to the small northern islands such as Ilôt Gabriel and Flat Island are offered; unquestionably recommended day trips.
Also big adventurous activities start in the port of Grand Baie, for example ”Big Game Fishing”, which makes a man’s heart beat faster. An obvious and quite understandable activity represents diving in Mauritius, also in Grand Baie. All tours and activities can be booked either with one of the many tour operators in Diving Centers, via hotels or partly by personal interaction with locals.
Grand Baie has a lot to offer and it is recommended to compare offers and negotiate to get the best available offer.
Shopping in Grand Baie
Of course like any tourist center Grand Baie has a wealth of shopping opportunities. The Sunset Boulevard is located right on the main street in the center of Grand Baie. It is reminiscent of a small shopping village in which all kinds of shops are housed. From clothing, jewelry, accessories to souvenirs and home furnishings can be found at Sunset Boulevard. So you will find a nice gift, between Ripcurl and River Woods, to remember your holiday in Mauritius. The Sunset Boulevard enables completely new clothes from head to foot, from beachwear to jewelery to formal evening wear.
Open Monday to Saturday till 6 pm, some also till 19 pm and Sundays the shops close at 12 pm or 1 pm.
The Super U complex is located near Sunset Boulevard. simply turn right at the traffic light at Sunset Boulevard (direction Pereybere) and after a few meters, you already see the complex on your left. Here as well you will find numerous boutiques and jewelry shops, but also an optician, a pharmacy and a supermarket (Super U) are divided on two floors. Regarding the Super U supermarket especially self catering tourists come at their expense. Outside you will find bumper cars, a bowling centre, a casino and several options for a quick meal.
Super U is opened from Monday to Thursday from 9 am till 8:30 pm, Friday and Saturday from 9 am till 9:30 pm and on Sundays from 9 am till 1:30 pm.
La Croisette is a large shopping center coming from Port Louis before entering the town to Grand Baie and is virtually impossible to miss. There are plenty of parking spaces available for the many visitors. In La Croisette you find countless clothing, jewelery and electrical shops, a grocery store, as well as restaurants and fast food snacks. Sometimes in the evening at the skate park in the center of La Croisette, events are organised and who wants to spend a cozy evening at the cinema, can find the current cinema program at the cinema of La Croisette.
La Croisette is opened from Monday till Thursday from 9:30 am till 20:30 pm, Friday and Saturday from 9:30 am till 9:30 pm and Sundays from 9:30 am till 4:30 pm.
Mont Choisy shopping promenade
The Mont Choisy shopping promenade is located immediately after La Croisette and can be reached via the roundabout at the entrance to Grand Baie. Mont Choisy is a simple shopping center in which clothing and groceries stores also a hairdresser and some small shops invite to browse through. On some days, events like live music and wine tasting are organised here. Unlike La Croisette, the rush is lower here, which makes shopping at Mont Choisy shopping promenade a quieter alternative.
Mont Choisy shopping promenade is opened from Monday till Thursday from 9:30 am till 7:30 pm, Friday and Saturday from 9:30 am till 9:30 pm and on Sundays from 9:30 am till 3 pm.
Nightlife and restaurants
Especially outside of the major shopping centers in Grand Baie the culinary senses will come to their expense. Below I would like to give a few recommendations, which I have also tried myself, but this should not be considered as a complete list and it is only to encourage to try something else. When you drive from Grand Baie to Pointe aux Canonniers and Trou aux Biches, at the end of Grand Baie, you find a little, hidden restaurant on the right side. The only clue to find “Le goût du Large” is quite a large table, which is immediately in front of the driveway. Here you can dine culinary delights right on the beach. When driving back to Grand Baie, after a few meters, you will find the “Beach House” after the first traffic light on the left side. Here, you are also very close to the ocean. “Beach House” is more a mix of a restaurant and a bar, which makes it not less tasty cuisine. Amidst the Sunset boulevard you can strengthen the “Paparazzi”, which is characterized also by an excellent cuisine. For a breakfast at the harbor in Grand Baie ‘s the “Sunset Cafe ” is recommended, which is situated directly beside the entrance of the jetties. When you go into the direction of Pereybere you find ” Cocoloko ” on the right side. A beautiful restaurant, despite the close by road, they cleverly separated the restaurant from the hustle and bustle. When you continue the road to Pereybere you will find on the right side ”Banana Beach Club”, with a great kitchen in the adjacent barbecue restaurant. When you go further in the direction of Pereybere you will find a little Italian restaurant ”Boghita” on your right, which is definitely worth a visit. In the ”little Bar a Bar” right after the entrance of La Cuvette, in front of a gas station, especially sushi lovers will love this place and when you follow the road to Pereybere a little further, just before entering Pereybere you find the nicely furnished and culinary recommended ”Napoleon”.
In Grand Baie and its surroundings there are a variety of good restaurants, which I discovered only partly because of my curiosity and the search for something new.
