From the north coast to Port Louis

Mauritius has treasures hidden everywhere…North, South, East, West, and everywhere in between…you’ll find something to see wherever you go. If you’re spending your Mauritian holiday in the North and would like to visit the South, then it requires travelling a good distance. I’m working as an intern for 6 months on Mauritius and I like to venture further afield when I’m not working. Luckily I have a lot of Mauritian friends, who help me when they can…but sometimes I like to do things alone – and go on a complete adventure without any insider knowledge. So I decided to travel...

Restaurants and Snacks in Mauritius

After 3 months on Mauritius I can already explain a little about the country and the people and share a few tips. Whether they are useful or not will become clear later, but they certainly give a good insight into island life. The food: For me, Mauritian food is always a taste sensation and sometimes even a little adventure. I’ll start small: with the snacks. Roti and Dholl Puri are very traditional snacks and almost everyone eats them. They consist of dough, and are similar to pancakes but they are savoury and have fewer calories. You’ll find few nutrients in...

DREAM HOLIDAY Mauritius

DREAM HOLIDAY Mauritius – by Tamara Dream accommodation My dream holiday to Mauritius would be staying in a villa near the beach with my family and friends. The villa would be in the North of Mauritius because it’s lively there. The accommodation would be a place of harmony and peace. But why is Mauritius my number one holiday destination? That’s simple: For me, Mauritius provides the perfect harmony of sparkling lagoons, beaches lined with palm trees, colourful coral reefs and lush valleys. The villa would also have a large, open kitchen and a large lounge with a flatscreen TV and...

Eating and drinking as a vegetarian in Mauritius 1

Eating and drinking as a vegetarian in Mauritius

First I’d like to address the question: What is Mauritian food? Anyone travelling to Mauritius will quickly realise that there is a huge variety of food here. This small island in the Indian Ocean is home to many different cultures and their delicacies; these eating habits are all mixed together. Mauritian cuisine is a blend of Creole, Chinese, European, African and Indian influences. These mixes are a real adventure for European connoisseurs. Meat, fish, poultry and vegetables are fried, boiled, steamed, grilled and pickled. However, many meals are fried and are often not well tolerated. For example, I get strong...

Swim with dolphins, Tamarin Bay, Mauritius

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always dreamt of swimming with dolphins. Even as a little girl I sat on the edge of a pool in a Swiss children’s zoo and watched the dolphins as they performed tricks. Back then I hadn’t realised that dolphins don’t belong in a pool, but in the wild. After watching the film The Cove I knew that keeping dolphins in an aquarium is incredibly cruel. All my life I’ve dreamed of being up close to these animals. Even when I was eighteen years old I had big plans to make this dream...

Oasis Luxusvillen, Péreybère, Mauritius

The few days at villa oasis Mauritius were very serene and tranquil. As promised in the brochure, the place is ideal for couples seeking solitude and intimacy. We had an agreeable intimate time together far from the bustling noise of town life. The villa being located in a very isolated place, we were never disturbed with the commotion of vehicles and we were completely secluded from social life. The housekeeper and caretaker were also very nice and ensured that we were not disturbed in any way. Your breakfast is served rapidly and the room prepared without any trouble to you....

Jewel of the North in Pointe aux Piments, Mauritius

From 3rd till 4th August, my colleagues, Natasha, Madeleine and I tried out the ‘Jewel of the North’. For those asking what or who the ‘Jewel of the North’ is, it is probably the most friendly villa complex in North-West Mauritius and it is well worth a visit. Shortly after 11am we set off from the office in Grand Baie. Pointe aux Piments is the name of the small, peaceful fishing village on the North-West coast of Mauritius in which this holiday complex is located. This beautiful villa complex is only fifteen minutes’ drive away from Grand Baie. Those holiday...
