Paradise Beach Luxury Apartment, Pointe d’Esny, Mauritius

From 28th June till 30th June 2012 I spent three wonderful days at a Paradise Beach luxury apartment on the South-East coast of Mauritius with my lovely colleague, Natasha. The apartment is only 15 minutes’ drive away from SSR international airport, 20 minutes’ drive from Curepipe and approx. 45 minutes from Port Louis, the capital city of Mauritius. The most beautiful beach in Mauritius, the Paradise Beach, is located in the middle of the colourful, friendly neighbourhood of Pointe D’Esny. This tropical paradise stretches from Blue Bay to the colourful town of Mahebourg and is referred to by the locals...

Charles Darwin and the elephant in Mauritius

Charles Darwin, the father of evolution, spent about ten days in Mauritius at the tender age of twenty-two during his travels around the world. His ship, The Beagle, left Great Britain in December 1831 and, nearly four years later, made a stop over on the small, tropical island in the Indian Ocean before returning to Britain on the second of October 1836. Entries from his diary indicate Darwin’s overwhelmingly positive response to the island. From the ship, he appears to have been in raptures over the Mauritian vista, saying that brightly coloured island more than equalled the his expectations which...

Mauritius and Mark Twain – the first American ship in Port Louis

Mauritius, for such a small land mass, has an astonishing amount of history contained within its sun-kissed borders. In 1786 it received its first American ship, the Grand Turk, which was under the command of Ebenezer West and William Vans and, in 1896, it played host to the eminent American writer, Mark Twain. The twelfth of April 1786 stands out in Mauritian naval history as the date on which Port Louis harbour first welcomed an American ship. In November 1784, the Grand Turk left America on a successful voyage to the Cape of Good Hope. Just over a year later,...

Direct flights from Frankfurt and Geneva to Mauritius

Since October 2011 Air Mauritius launched a new flight direct to Frankfurt, while a further direct flight to Geneva is planned to depart every Saturday from the beginning of 2012. The schedule so far is confined to one direct flight a week to each destination, with flights to Frankfurt departing on Fridays and an additional flight to Munich which leaves on Wednesdays. The decision by Air Mauritius to include direct flights to Germany and Switzerland indicates a rise in the tourism market from the two countries. All three flights are on the Airbus Industrie A340-300 aeroplanes which are named after...

Les Îles Vanille Mauritius Réunion Madagascar Seychelles

Les Îles Vanille, or the Vanilla Islands in English, consist of a number of islands in the Indian Ocean: Mauritius, Réunion, the Seychelles, Madagascar and the Comoros. Grouped together under the name ‘Les Îles Vanille’, these islands seek to develop tourism exchange between them, particularly with the emergence of the Vanilla Islands Cruising Circuit. To begin with, a marketing mix based on island pairs will be introduced, such as Mauritius- Réunion, Réunion-Madagascar, Madagascar-Seychelles, Mauritius-Seychelles, Réunion-Seychelles and Mauritius-Madagascar. The underlying concept for such a marketing strategy is accessibility, quality competitiveness and solidarity in order to promote and build up the cultural...

Swiss Honeymoons in Mauritius

Mauritius is a popular honeymoon destination for people the world over.  With year-round good weather, an outstanding hospitality industry and a vibrant culture, it is hardly surprising that so many couples choose to spend their first few weeks of married life soaking up the sun in this Indian Ocean paradise. In 2010 the Swiss tourism market in Mauritius grew to twenty-one percent, more than justifying the confidence shown in this sector by the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority. In 2011 the projected growth is thirty-six percent and this honeymoon segment will contribute strongly to the Mauritian economy. In practical terms, the...

Mauritius Flights to China

At the start of July 2011 Air Mauritius launched a new flight direct to Shanghai from the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport in Mauritius. This has a potential impact not only on the traffic from Mauritius to China, but also on the tourism sector in Mauritius as it is now much easier for visitors from Asia to access the island. The new Airbus Industrie A330-200, named ‘Trochetia’ after the national endemic flower of the island, was launched in December 2007. Nearly two years later a second Airbus, named ‘Nénuphar’ after the famous aquatic plant which grows abundantly in the botanical...

We are finally able to announce our collaboration with THE Domaine de Bel Ombre. These special online offers, which have really attracted our attention and created so much work, are now available for guests to book directly through us. Personally, I find this resort very interesting and relaxing with a real ‘wow’ factor. My enthusiasm and joy at being able to contractually offer this location, is also portrayed in many diverse articles, which we have written in order to...

Holidays in Mauritius – on the beach or near the beach?

When you think about a holiday to Mauritius, you probably imagine a beautiful hotel on a lovely white sandy beach with turquoise-blue sea, warm weather and blue skies. As beautiful as it appears in the holiday brochures, adverts, and pictures on the holiday postcards you receive from family and friends from their amazing holiday destinations. The type of accommodation in this image can vary, from luxury villas to luxury suites and individual apartments rented out by private landlords. In most of the requests I receive, the accommodation has to be located directly on the beach – right in front of...

Mauritius by Travel Writer Gemma Burnham

Mauritius When I think of Mauritius, I picture my perfect honeymoon destination; pure white soft sands, dazzling turquoise waters lapping at my feet as I lay on the beach in full glory of the blazing sun, warming my skin and giving it a shimmering bronzed glow, laying there for hours, as still as a lizard on a rock and as relaxed as if I’ve spent a week in a spa. I think of the awe inspiring sunsets that have a mesmerising draw, fixating your eyes to the ever-changing skies, changing from blue to pink to red to purple, then, the...

Planning a holiday to Mauritius – where should I stay? What is my budget?

Planning a holiday to Mauritius – where should I stay? What is my budget? I’m trying to put myself in the shoes of a tourist who is visiting Mauritius for the first time. If you are reading this article, you’ve probably found it through your ‘Mauritius’ Google search. Most of my sites suit tourists who are looking for a more individual holiday; individual accommodation on a self-catering basis, or with breakfast included, possibly without activity programmes or set eating times. Many tourists enjoy the increased freedom and the feeling that you are staying in your own home.  Understandably, there are...
