Mauritius forms part of the Mascareignes. Which consists of the
neighbour islands, Reunion and Rodrigues. Mauritius is found in
the Indian Ocean and its location is 20°17S 57°33E. Mauritius
is located 855 Km to the east of Madagascar and 1800 Km to the east
from the African Continent. Mauritius belongs to the African Continent.
The next closest " big " island to Mauritius is "
Ile de la Reunion" which belongs to the French and is still
a French department or a " Départment d'Outre-Mers ".
La Reunion lies 160 Km to the west of Mauritius.
The size of Mauritius is 1865 km², 64 km in length an 47 km
in width. The total coastline is about 177 km. Mauritius also owns
large areas of its surrounding seas, which is rich of fish resources.
Nearly all around the island we have coral reefs, which makes it
an excellent location for diving. Our white sandy beaches or known
worldwide. Also inland Mauritius has got a lot to present. The flat
land in the north, the volcanic high plateaus with its mountains
in the centre of the island are a must for all you nature lovers
to see.
Officially, the Republic of Mauritius also includes the islands
Agalega, Saint Brandon and Rodrigues. Mauritius is fighting to get
its other 2 islands Diego Garcia and Tromelin back.
Diego Garcia is rented to the USA by the UK for their military purposes
and Tromelin is still under the possession of the French.
Mauritius is a volcanic island. The last volcanic eruption took
place for about 100 000 years. No volcanic eruptions are expected
in the near future.
The highest mountain of Mauritius reaches 828 metres in height
and is called " Le Piton de la Rivière-Noire ".
Mauritius possesses one of the biggest unbroken coral reefs around
its coastal lines in the world.
The capital city of Mauritius is Port Louis with about 100 000
inhabitants.
