| The Republic
of Mauritius is a democratic state, which is also a member of the
British Commonwealth. Due to our historical background, Mauritian
politics look similar to the British political system. The government
controls different parts and sectors, for example: laws.
Mauritius also protects its inhabitants and guarantees them human
rights, such as freedom of speech, free to choose a religion, freedom
for religious ceremonies and the right to own private property.
Mauritius elects its President through the " National Assembly
". The president can control and is allowed to send orders
to the Mauritian army. But the tasks of the Mauritian president
do not look alike what the American president has to fulfil.
The person that rules and governs the island is the " Prime
Minister ". Every 5 years the population and the national assembly
vote a new prime minister.
The prime minister chooses his cabinet from the national assembly.
He looks after the issues and assembly meetings of its cabinet,
which has got a responsibility over the national assembly.
The national assembly brings out new laws, Helds debates and talks
about new political issues, and controls enterprises or businesses
owned by the state, which are under the control of the " Executive
". Ideas or new laws, known as " Bills ", are introduced
and then discussed in the national assembly. Later on the politicians
held a voting about what should be introduced, changed or not. The
new laws or ideas will only be introduced after this voting, if
the president agrees.
