Default Accommodation in private houses, bungalows, apartments

Hello everybody,

I am planning to do a backpacking tour to Mauritius. Does anyone have good advice where to find low priced accommodation?
Instead of staying in a hotel, I would prefer to stay in a private house, a bungalow or apartment.
Any suggestions?

Thanx
Steven

Hello Steven,

It is no problem to find an accomodation in smaller bungalows or apartments in Mauritius. It can only get a bit difficult during the main season around Christmas.
For the rest of the year you have a broad choice of smaller accomodations all over the island. It is the optimal way to get to know the country and its people. Take a look on this website itself, there are some nice offers

Hope this helps.
Richard

Hej Steven,

you could also try Couchsurfing ... I don't know if you know this kind of travelling .. the prinicipal of couchsurfing is to meet nice people and to stay in their home for 1-2 (or more??) nights - perfect for you as a backpacker .. you have just to join the comunity (CouchSurfing - Participate in Creating a Better World, One Couch At A Time) ..

If you want to know more about it - feel free to ask me =)

Hello Friederike!

Thank you very much for this hint! It's a great website, I got to get signed in, then I can take a look around.
Have you ever used it to travel? Where did you go and how did it work out?

Bye
Steven

Hej Steven,

No, I have never tested this kind of travelling - I just signed in some weeks ago .. but I have some friends who tried out and who told me that it is perfect because you get a place to sleep and at the same time you get to know somebody who can show you the best bars or clubs in the town .. and my friends had the chance that the person went out with them to drink a beer or something like that .. and I think it's pretty cool.

Normally you have a look for somebody who lives in the city you want to go to, you have a look at his description and if he seeme to be cool, you write a message if it would be possible to stay in his appartment for some nights.

But I heard from a guy that it is quite difficult for a guy to find somebody because most people prefer girls .. I don't know if it's right .. try it out =)

When are you going to Mauritius?

Hi!

Well, I will take a look there and try to find out if someone also would like to give a place to sleep to some poor guy - or do you think I should better change my name into a girl's?

My trip is not yet organized, for the moment all is just an idea. I hope I will be able to go next year, all depends on time and money...

When are you going to Mauritius? How long will you be staying and have you found you found your accommodation on the couchsurfing site?

All the best
Steven

I will go to Mauritius on monday ... and how long I will stay depends on how the things are going there - at the moment my flight back to Germany is in january but thanks to Condor I can change the date as I want =)

So I can start the things quite relaxed and can decide afterwards how long I want to stay =)

For the accomodation - the center where I will work gives me a room for the moment and I will have a look if I change the appartment or not. I would really like to live in Flic en Flac - but I will see.

But the site of Couchsurfing helped me to get in contact with some guys from the island and to get some advices about Mauritius .. so that I won't be completely lonely and lost when I arrive there =)

Hey Friederike!

So, you are in Mauritius now? Cool
And, you're happy with your destination? First impressions?

That's nice, that you are so flexible and can decide spontaneously how long you want to stay on the island. When I will come (hopefully next year) I will only be able to take about 3 weeks holidays...

Let us get some news, if you still have some time besides work and beach life
Bye
Steven

Hej ..

yes, now I am on the island .. the first impression is that the people are very nice and helpful but it'a also quite different from Europe (why are the shops closing at 4 p.m.?)

I will stay here until January ... but I will have a look how long I will be working here .. perhaps it's possible to finish in December in order to have some time to travel a little bit around .. because when I am already here, I also want to see the nice places of the island ..

I will see .. at the moment I have to find a place where I can get a connection to the Internet .. that's not soo clear here on the island =)

Default Accommodation for aid worker

Hi!

I am traveling to Madagascar for a Norwegian development aid organization (FAIR), but will fly in via Mauritius because of the resent troubles in Madagascar. I arrive in Mauritius on Thursday the 19th of February, and have a ticket further on Tuesday 24th.

Have anyone a good idea of cheap accommodation in Mauritius for that period? If the situation gets worse in Madagascar, I might have to prolong the stay in Mauritius as well.

My travel budget is quite backpacker like, and I understand that hotels in Mauritius are quite expensive.

Thanks in advance!

Bjoern.
