Default bungalows for rent

In the south of the island of Mauritius, precisely at Riambel, a bungalow with seaside view is being rented. It consists of 4 bedrooms with air conditioner.
Also in the north of the island, at Pereybere a luxurious bungalow on a private land is as well being rented. It is 100% privacy no disturbance, 1 bedroom with air conditioner, swimming pool, as well as access to internet wifi, multiple televisions channels, alarm, secure lock, a cleaner 6 days/7, security 24/24

Default looking for info on accomodation, salaries and working in Mauritius please?

Hi all

Apologies for replying to this post - although it is very much related to my query; it is not clear how I can post a new thread??

I am based in London, but considering a 12-24 month contract available to me out in Mauritius working for a local Mauritian company owned by a French parent company... for which I already work in London.
I am South African and big on outdoors and fishing, and I'm keen to get out of the concrete jungle in London for a while; plus I will be closer to family in South Africa (Durban / Natal midlands)
I have been to Mauritius for 9 days holiday in May 2008, and besides some unfortunate weather and food poisoning from a restaurant in Grand Baie - I loved it! I even managed a deep sea fishing trip and caught a dorado.

I am interested in finding out about:
a) the cost of permanent accomodation for a one, two or three bedroom place, near the coast - between Flic en Flac and Grand Baie?
and
b) salary surveys - to consider local salary levels for someone in my position
and
c) visa regulations for working for a registered local company in Mauritius. I have a South African and British passports.

I am a finance professional (accountant) working in the international media production industry... looking to take up the opportunity for a similar local role a bit inland from Port Louis.

This would be from as soon as May2009.

Will be very grateful for any leads you can give me please?

Thanks and kind regards
Ken

You have come to the right place to post Ok, to start off a new thread, you would need to surf around a bit, that is navigate through the forum to see a bit how its structured. There where posts are listed for the english accomodation section, that is here: http://www.isla-mauricia.com/forum/a...ion-mauritius/

You'll see a button where it says "New Thread", click on that and you can start off new threads.

Oh my! Nice that you didn't blame it on the country right away and still love this place. Dorado is really a good fish to eat I live in Grand Baie.

Ok, usually apartments in Grand Baie will be a bit more expensive than the surrounding regions. I would say, an average price could be Rs. 15 000 per month.
You divide that per 40 and it makes you around EUR 375. By the way there is a bungalow that might be of interest for you, i could email you some pics and descriptions of if you like. Located a few mins drive from Grand Baie.

Hmm, what position will that be ? A salesperson in a shop can earn from Rs. 6000 - 10 000 a month. The more important the job, the higher the salary. But yes, there are also differences between Mauritian salaries and what foreigners will earn. Depends on the tasks and if only a few ones can do it.

I suppose you might find all the necessary information on this site:

Ok. So if i understand it well, your company that is owned by a french parent company, will outsource part of its work to Mauritius ?

Ok Ken, sunny regards from Mauritius!

Default working in Mauritius?

Baie Dankie Dietmar,

And goeie middag from a sunny and warm (for-a-change) London.
Your response has been very helpful, a sincere Thank you for this.

I would be very grateful if you could send me links or details on whatever properties you know know about that might be suitable.
Perhaps you could send these directly to my email address, or as a private message please (if this forum has such a thing as private messages)?

I would be based in Ebene, hence would like to live on west/ north-west / north side of the island; as near to on the coast as possible.
I imagine cycling (? maybe too far), bussing or driving a motorcycle/scooter to work and back.
I intend to get a boat for deep sea fishing and sightseeing, plus I am an obsessive fly-fisherman also, hence I'm keen to look at places near the beach please?

You are close on your understanding of the business:
The business already exists in Mauritius, for years, as is local... employing local employees. It is one of our global production hubs; and I have the opportunity to go out to implement our standard (global) group systems and processes and manage the growth, investment and profitability of this hub.

Regarding salary surveys, I am battling to find either
a) any MUR recruitment agencies online, or
b) any salary survey info online.
In the spirit of the business vernture - I will earn local wages, but I need to figure out what they might be to see if its feasible.
(I do remember that eating out etc certainly wasn't cheaper than Europe, but it sounds like accomodation and the normal cost of living certainly is? Supermarkets were quite cheap... so I cannot gauge the cost of living.)
I am looking for salary ranges that a finance director / CFO might be paid in a local company please?
Any references or thoughts would be mose welcome please?

Thanks for your assistance and time, very kind.
I certainly owe you a few drinks or a fishing trip when I finally arrive

Kind regards
Ken

Yes private message works. Just click on my user name and you should be able to send me a private message. Since I'm the Admin I should be able to email you as well.

Cycling, it kind of goes uphill till Ebene, and the roads leading there are mainly highways and the traffic is pretty dense in the morning. A good motorcycle could be better, or a scooter. You could get past the traffic...

So you want to stay at the beach, but kind of close to Ebene. Flic en Flac is definitely closer then. The north is further away, and to go to your work you would always need to pass through Port Louis which is always traffic jammed in the mornings and afternoons. You then might need to wake up 2 hours earlier in order to get to work on time... Whereby from Flic en Flac you'll have as from Quatre Bornes some traffic, but its really close to Ebene.

At the moment I don't have anything to offer in the region of Flic en Flac, I suppose as from April maybe. But in this forum there are several people who have found their stay in flic en flac, maybe they can give a hint here where...

Also you'll be close to Tamarin and other places in the Black River district, its a pretty neat district, it might remember you a bit of SA, it even has a rugby field!

But you'll need a boat licence to operate them here. Do you have any such licence. Else you'll need to pass it here. Takes quite sometime.

Sounds like ACCENTURE to me, but i could be wrong I have friends working there. But in Port-Louis.

If you eat junk food on the streets (sorry, i know many people love it, i love it to but its not healthy food) you can eat like for 1 Euro per day. And after 30 days you'll have gastritis So, yep, eating in restaurants everyday can be like EUR 5-8 per day. If you buy your own stuff and prepare your own food, you'll save a lot. Anyway there are also sandwich shops where you can get a sandwich for EUR 1.50. Accomodation has prices that are low, in regions that you might not wish to stay, and prices that hit the sky in places that one will dream of to stay
Supermarkets, i think they are OK. Similar prices as Europe for products that are imported. You'll get a lot of SA brands. People live here on Rs. 5000 a month, its tight, Rs. 10 000 kind of normal. And with Rs. 25 000 you should be OK. Anything above that gets you in the comfort zone.

I have no idea here.

Yesterday morning while I was at the beach watching over the ocean, i was thinking its been quite a while that I haven't been out on the sea. So going for Fishing would be a nice option

Thanks again Dietmar, with your advice also - I am making some headway on groundwork for my investigations.

I don't yet have my skippers licence, but I get out to sea as often as possible when visiting South Africa - so I will work towards getting this either in Mauritius or South Africa.
In the meantime it will have to be paddleski, jetski or charter

Please keep an eye out for any suitable accomodation leads; and I will watch this forum as you recommend.

Hope the sun visits again soon!

Kind regards
Ken

Hi Ken,

how is it going upthere in London ? Is the recession making itself felt where you are ? Maybe not necessarily your sector but on a whole ?

I sent you a personal message concerning accomodations in flic en flic. Let me know if you are having problems retrieving the message.

By the way, as a means of transportation to work you can also consider the busses, which are a very cheap means of transportation and you can get nearly everywhere with them. For 1 trip you'll pay often less than a Euro. So it could be that to get to work and back home by bus you would be spending around 2 - 3 Euros a day.

The Bus are ofcourse not exactly the same as in Europe, yet the Express route buses are comfortable, big, more spacious and with air con. The normal lines are different, you have those big busses with lots of seats and people sit next to each other. Its also a nice way to get to know mauritius from another perspective. People are usually friendly in busses. But for a seat that is meant for 2 people, and a seat that is meant for 3 people, its usually in europe that such a seat would be seated by 1 person and the other by 2. But here whatever size and luggage a person has, the persons will squeeze in and make it fit that there will be always 2 on the left bench, and 3 on the right one. Since the buses are high off the ground level, you'll have a nice view. An option to consider.

Also, many companies have their own transportation service, maybe your company does and they might pick you up everyday.

c u, dietmar, greetings from the north of mauritius.
