Default Coming to Mauritius in June ?

Hello,

i received the following question per email which i thought i would answer best in the forum so that it might be of help to you all.

Quote:
hello, i will come from europe at the middle of june and i want to know please how is the wheather in this period of the year? Also i want to ask what is better to have Euro or US dollars?
TY very much and best regards
In June the weather will be more cool since its our winter season.
The maximum temperature will be averaging at around 26°Celsius.
The lowest temperature will be averaging at around 20°Celsius.
Sea water temperature will be averaging at 26°Celsius.
There might be around 21 rainy days and around 6 hours of sunshine daily.
Humidity will be averaging at around 70%.

In the afternoons it gets colder and during the night temperature will go a bit more down so that sometimes if you go out, you might need to take along a light pullover.

Ideal climate conditions for the ones that don't like to hot.

The hot seasons start in november.

Default Moving to Mauritius

Hi,

I am thinking of moving to Mauritius to live there with my wife and young family. I would be really grateful if anybody could give me an idea about life over there.

I have lived in a few different places before but, have only just started researching Mauritius, so I do not know much about it. I am interested to find out about the standard of accomodation and the cost of living generally. What primary schools are like? How safe it is. What it is like culturally and, in what there is to do aside from watersports. I would also be interested to find out about the impact of tourism and whehter it is possible to get away from this sometimes? Simimlarly, I am curious to know whether how integrated foreigners are into the community - and whether the expats mix well with local people (e.g. do they go to the same bars, schools, sports clubs etc.) I am happy to meet other expats but, would not like to live in a ghetto.

I plan to come over later in the year but at this stage, anything information would be gratefully received!

Thanks in advance!!

Hello Franco,

first of all I would like to welcome you to the Mauritius Forum here.

Your questions cannot be answered with a few simple sentences, but first I would advise you to
come and spend some hollidays here and have a look at the place if you might like it here or not
and if you will be able to imagine living here or not. There are quite a few expats here and many of them
are really happy here and are not considering of moving elsewhere. Mauritius is a country with lots
of oppurtunities, stable economy, stable government, a country on the move, a country going
towards economic growth. I only hope that all the growth sectors are also steered in the
right directions. Much doesn't always mean better!

Maybe you can list some destinations ? Maybe I'll be able to tell you if there are some similarities
so you can get a picture.

You have it all here, cheap apartments in urban or rural areas, or more expensive accomodations around the coastal regions, from beautiful villas to apartments, and apartments in buildings with several storeys in the cities.
Depends what you want, what you can afford, where you would like to live, setting type, and if the place should be close to the school or work. You can also buy villas here where you can stay.

What primary schools are like?
You have private primary schools here and then catholic primary schools and then primary schools from the government. Catholic and government primary schools are free. For private ones you have to pay. You have schools that have a french curriculum and you have schools that have the british curriculum. Private schools such as Clavis and a few others are popular here and are good. People don't necessarily live close to the schools that send their kids there, there are school buses that will pick up the kids right in front of the house.

How safe it is.
Mauritius is safe. And you can also live in closed complex areas that have 24 hour security. But on generall its a safe place and thats also why many people like it here and tourists like to come back.

Mauritius is a melting pot where many religions, races and cultures meet and have formed the country and given it its actual shape of culture. Faith, religion and believes play an important role in the daily life of the mauritian. In some places on the same road you can see a temple, followed by a mosque and across it you can see a church. People in mauritius get well along with each other even though there are many differences, people respect each other and converse in creole. Mauritians usually speak several languages, french, creole and english is spoken by many. Else I would suggest to come and see for yourself

There are also many activities you can do inland. There are spots where you can go climbing, walking, and so on. Once you have made yourself here some good friends, you'll have enough things you guys can organise to do. Maybe in the beginnings it might be tough but once you are settled I haven't heard anyone tell me its boring here. Just the beauty of the country itself remains something that you can admire over and over again. But for sure there are things that you can do in Europe that you cannot do here, there are definitely differences.

Tourism has created many jobs, and allows the country to have a good income from tourism. I've grown up here and lived here and in Europe, in my opinion the tourism industry has and is well managed and well planned. I don't or haven't seen some dramatic impact of tourism on the country. For sure tourism has brought changes, but on a whole the changes it has brought, I wouldn't say that these are or were negative. I am sure this topic can be elaborated but I don't want to make me answer to long for today.

To get away ? There are still many beaches and places here where you don't see any tourists. As well as in the cities on the high plateau, tourists don't venture there very often. Tourists are usually close to their hotels or on some beaches and doing some sight seeing and in some shops in towns but else I guess apart from Grand Baie, I haven't seen huge masses of tourists. Grand Baie is the tourist center of the island.

I would like to say here, if you want to integrate and mix with the locals, its possible, and it can work out well. It depends on the expats. Maybe an advantage would be to learn creole and french. There are expats who do not mix, and there are expats who mix.
Yes, mauritians and expats go to the same schools, bars, sports clubs etc.
You can also meet expats and mauritians in english speaking churches for example.
Expats come from different countries, some expats seem to prefer staying in a secured ghetto, some just mix and live among the mauritians. You have it all.

That would be a good idea, how long are you planning to come ? Will you bring your whole family with you ? At the end of the year it will be summer time here, hot weatcher.

Wish you a nice week end! Take care!
