Public Beaches in the West of Mauritius

Flic en Flac
Several kilometres long and lined by Filaos trees, the public beach of Flic en Flac is the main beach at the west coast. The beach can be easily reached by bus and is often visited by locals. A car park and other basic amenities are provided, including patrols by the coastal police. The beach is nice for swimming, but care must be taken due to currents. The main attraction of the beach are numerous restaurants which are located directly at the ocean front and offer a large variety of dishes.

Tamarin
The bay of Tamarin is a favourite location for surfers from all around the world. It is very popular with Mauritians from the Tamarin and Black River regions. The bay is near an estuary which can be crossed at low-tide, opening the way to another beach with private bungalows. The bay is famous, because it is frequently visited by a school of dolphins. Several dolphin-watching boat trips start from the beach. The beach is equipped with toilets, a large kiosk, public benches and a car-park. Regular patrols ensure the safety of visitors. The beach is not lighted at night. Swimming is very comfortable; the seabed is sandy with a few stones. The sea state changes frequently: with an increase of wind the waves become larger, reaching all the way to the beach. The Tamarin hotel, located at the ocean front, offers a large variety of dishes and beverages.

La Preneuse
This small beach is located at the bottom of the ruin of an old limekiln, at the edge of the Black River district. Not far from the beach is the Martello tower, a building from colonial times. The tower was completely renovated with the help of the office for national heritage. Tours of the tower are now possible.
