Usually the south-east trade wind is blowing quiet steady from easterly directions. This wind makes even the hottest temperatures very agreeable.
In the mountains it is generally a bit colder. This can be experienced especially in the evening hours and at altitudes starting from 500 m. It is thus advisable to pack some warmer clothing for hiking.

CyclonesFrom December till March it is possible that a
cyclone with heavy downpours and storm will hit the island. According to statistics, Mauritius is in the centre of a cyclone only every 5 years. Still, every year the island is hit by the remnants of 3 to 5 storms. Most frequently, cyclones form on the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn where the body of water heats up to 26°C for longer periods of time. At this temperature the water on the surface evaporates much quicker than the water in underlying layers. High cloud towers build and are put into motion by the rotation of the earth. These clouds bring storm and heavy rainfalls.
Of course, the holiday residences are well prepared for these cyclones. After the storm a disruption of the electricity and water supply must be anticipated. The telephone network may be interrupted and flight delays are possible.
Storm warnings are made public on TV and radio. On the free call 96 you will be able to receive the latest news and helpful information in several languages. The
warning system in Mauritius is structured in 4 classes:
Class 1: There is a theoretic possibility that a cyclone which still is hundred kilometres apart of the island might hit Mauritius.
Class 2: Growing possibility of a cyclone. Heavy downpours.
Class 3: Remnants of a cyclone hit Mauritius. Closure of the airport, curfew and ban on driving. Wind speed 120 – 160 km/h.
Class 4: Mauritius is in the centre of the cyclone. Please follow the instructions of the hotel staff. You are safe in your rooms.
