Politics of Mauritius

The Republic of Mauritius is a democratic state, which is also a member of the British Commonwealth. Due to the island’s historical background, Mauritian politics are similar to the British political system.

Mauritius protects its inhabitants and guarantees them human rights, such as the freedom of speech, the freedom to choose a religion, the freedom for religious ceremonies and the right to own private property.

Mauritius elects its President through the "National Assembly ".

The person that rules and governs the island is the "Prime Minister ". Every 5 years the population and the national assembly vote a new prime minister.

The prime minister chooses his cabinet from the national assembly. He looks after the issues and assembles meetings of the cabinet, which has got a responsibility towards the national assembly.

The national assembly lances new laws, holds debates and talks about new political issues, and controls enterprises or businesses owned by the state, which are under the control of the "Executive ". Ideas or new laws, known as "Bills ", are introduced and then discussed in the national assembly. Later on the politicians hold a voting about whether the law should be introduced, changed or disregarded. The new laws will only be introduced after this voting, if the president agrees.
