Pointe d’Esny is a very quiet and tranquil area where it is great to chill-out. The beach located right in front of the Paradise Beach is known to be one of the most beautiful beaches of the island, stretching for miles along the coast. The lagoon offers different shades of blue, azure and turquoise where bathing is a pure pleasure –and safe for children.
About 2 minutes away is the town of Blue Bay where different kinds of water sport activities are available to do in the lagoon. The lagoon and its coral reef were declared a protected Marine Park in 1997. The reef is rich in biodiversity. More than 50 types of coral reefs have been identified over the years, as well as a large number of coral fish. The area is thus a delight for snorkelers and divers.
The closest major town in the area is Mahebourg. There you can find restaurants that propose the best of the Mauritian cuisine. Or you may enjoy shopping at the weekly market, where you will browse through clothes, vegetables and fruits, or the fresh fish stalls. The town also offers a nice waterfront, ideal for a stroll along the coast. Although Mahebourg is a moder and developed town, it is also a historical city. You can discover about Mauritius’ and Mahebourg’s history at the Naval Museum, which is located right next to a Neo-Gothic church called Notre Dame D’Anges. The bell of the Saint Géran, 16th century navigator maps, model ships and swords pistols and guns from the 16th and 17th century are on display at the museum.
The south of the island is also an attractive area. The La Vanille Crocodile Park is most certainly a place to visit, with its piece of wild nature, inhabited by monkeys, giant tortoises, and of course crocodiles. The southern coast offers a completely different scenery from the east coast. Indeed, there you will find a wilder décor of cliffs and rough beaches, as well as the untamed power of the Indian Ocean. Finally, not too far you will find the Black River Gorges National Park, where you can discover a wild and clean nature, visit the 7-Coloured Earth park of Chamarel and admire a few of Mauritius’ most mesmerizing waterfalls.
