La Villa Perle d’Azur: A small testimony of Mauritian history and an insight view on modern arts

The Villa Perle d’Azur is a family business, which today is run in the fifth generation by the couple Jean-Claude and Barbara Desvaux de Marigny. The ancestors of Jean-Claude relocated as businessmen from France to Mauritius. Today you will still find the Théâtre de Marigny and the Avenue the Marigny in Paris, which are the evidence of the French heritage of the family. In Mauritius the emigrants found their new home and built up a house at the beach of Roches Noire. In the year 1970 this house was demolished and a new one was built up. Jean-Claude and his wife met in South Africa, where he has been staying for 35 years. In the year 2003 the two of them moved to Mauritius and Jean-Claude, the eldest son of the family, assumed responsibility for the management of the villa. He completely renovated it and included new modern features. Today Barbara and Jean-Claude live on the upper floor, in an apartment which is totally separate from the villa so that the guests will be able to enjoy their privacy. Even though the couple is working fulltime, they can always be reached by telephone. In the evenings or on the weekends they will always be happy to assist you with information on Mauritius or the organization of tours around the island.

The great passion of the couple Desvaux de Marigny is fine arts. While Barbara is mainly engaged in jewellery design and the manufacturing of pearls, Jean-Claude is tempted by glass works and painting. During a stay in South Africa he recently discovered a new art form: art clay silver. The material is a mixture of silver particles, organic binder and water. Once a piece of jewellery is designed, it is fired in a kiln and the clay burns away. A piece of jewellery out of pure silver remains. Thus Jean-Claude produces pendants, brooches and other jewellery. If you are interested in fine arts, the couple Desvaux de Marigny will be pleased to show you some of their artworks. It is their dream to be able to commit themselves fully to their art one day. Contact the two of them if you are interested in learning how to manufacture beads, one can surely arrange for an introductory course on a free day.

Thus Villa Perle d’Azur is an extraordinary place to spend your dream holidays in Mauritius. Enjoy home away from home in a gorgeous natural surrounding, experience a small piece of Mauritian history and get an insight view into fine arts.
