Mauritius Hotels

The name Mauritius conjurers up images of picture-perfect stretches of white, sandy beach, gently lapped by the warm and clear waters of a turquoise lagoon, bordered by palm trees and saturated in sunshine. Coconuts, pineapples, service and long, cool, refreshing tropical cocktails are also all common items with which to furnish the imagination. These things, however, do not need to remain solely in the mind, while the body is stuck in an office somewhere, cold, bored and full of innumerable cups of coffee. With the enormous variety of hotels in Mauritius, there is sure to be one to suit any type of tastes or budgets.

The most well-known hotels are obviously the very expensive, luxurious, top-of-the-range establishments frequented by royalty, film stars and politicians, and for good reason. With their lush, tropical gardens, crystalline swimming pools, verdant golf courses, round the clock service and a range of rooms and suites to make even the fussiest of guests swoon, it is obvious why these hotels are so popular. In addition to the gourmet restaurants and breathtaking surroundings, these hotels offer a variety of extra activities, such as water-sports in the clear, turquoise lagoon, excursions on catamarans and glass-bottomed boats, full spa treatments and specialised kids clubs for children.

It is not always necessary, however, to book a five-star hotel to receive a welcome of the same quality. If the hotels do not have spa facilities on site, most establishments will be able to arrange treatments, like massages, facials and pedicures, on request. Water-sports are common all around the island and the majority of hotels, no matter what size or star rating, will offer these activities either directly from the premises or just a short distance away. Snorkelling is best done during the morning as the water is at its clearest at this time of day, but even in the late afternoon the bright colours of the tropical fish will appear alluringly through the perspex lens of a pair of goggles.

For guests who have just arrived on a long, international flight, the majority of hotels offer airport transfers so that their guests can be transported with ease and luxury to their final destination on the island. When they arrive, they will find not only a warm, Mauritian welcome but also a soothing fruit cocktail drink, or a variation on the theme, to greet them. Although Mauritius is generally chosen for its sunshine and warm temperatures, during the summer months these can be a bit much so the hotel rooms offer a cool, air-conditioned alternative to the glorious heat outside.

Most of the hotels on the island have direct access onto the beach; for those few that do not, the beach is likely to be only a few minutes away and they also offer swimming pools for those who do not fancy sharing their water with fish or other sea-going creatures.
