Exchanging your currency and withdrawing money in Mauritius
When you go on holiday to Mauritius, you will need the local currency. In many shops, especially further away from the tourist centres, you can only pay in the local currency.
The currency for Mauritius is the Mauritian Rupee (ISO code: MUR). 1 Mauritian Rupee is divided into 100 cents.
In 1877 the Mauritian Rupee was introduced as the official national currency. Previously Mauritius had the Mauritian dollar, the British sterling pound and the Indian Rupee. So when the national currency changed, the Rupee was chosen, because at that time large waves of immigration spilled into the country from India. Even today the settlement of Indian immigrants makes up the largest population group in Mauritius.
It is recommended that travelers exchange their money locally. Even at the airport there are many exchange offices. At the holiday resorts there are exchange offices and banks, where you can exchange money. Insider tip: You should compare the exchange rates as many exchange offices are in competition with one another. However the exchange offices often offer a better rate than the banks.
The bank opening hours are Monday to Thursday 09:15 – 15:15, Friday 09:15 – 15:30.
On Saturday only a few banks are open, from 09:15 till 11:15.
So that you don’t have to bring too much cash on holiday with you, there is also the opportunity to withdraw money from cash machines in Mauritius using your credit card.
We recommend that our customers inform and verify with their bank before traveling if their credit card will work abroad on ATMs, in this way you can be sure if you will have local access to your credit card account once you are here.
The following major credit cards are accepted: Visa, SparCard (Prepaid Card), American Express and MasterCard.
WARNING: The major cash cards can only be used at ATMs in Mauritius if these have a Maestro Logo on them. Please be aware that many new cash cards issued by banks in Europe such as in Germany do not have the Maestro Logo on them anymore. Please check! We advise you in this case to bring along your credit card.
