Currency of MauritiusThe monetary unit of Mauritius is the Mauritian Rupee (ISO-Code: MUR). 1 Rupee is divided into 100 cents.
In 1877 the Mauritian Rupee was introduced as the official monetary unit of the island. Beforehand one could pay with the Mauritian Dollar, the British Pound Sterling and the Indian Rupee. When the currency was changed the Rupee was chosen, as by this time many Indian immigrants came to the island.
