Customs and traditions in Mauritius

Beachwear:
Mauritius is a country shaped by the influences of Hindu and Muslim culture. Skinny-dipping is prohibited by law. Topless sunbathing is not appreciated, but tolerated on the beaches of the hotels.

Sanctuaries:
Whenever you visit sanctuaries, please wear appropriate clothes. One should renounce miniskirts, shorts and tank tops, not to hurt the feelings of the believers.
If you enter a Hindu or Buddhist temple, please take off your shoes and headgear. The visit of mosques is only permitted when there are no prayers. Women should inquire beforehand if they may also access the mosque.

Photographing:
If you want to take pictures of other persons first ask them for their permission. One should also be cautious when taking pictures in sanctuaries.

Tipping:
Tipping is not obligatory, but of course tips are always accepted gratefully. A tip of 10% is common usage.
