On Arrival in MauritiusBefore your arrival in Mauritius the flight attendants will hand out forms which are needed for the immigration in Mauritius. You will fill in the number of your passport, the number of your flight, your occupation, details about your stay in Mauritius, etc. This form will be controlled along with your passport by the immigration officers. Please make sure that your passport is still valid for 6 months. The immigration officers will then issue an entry permit for the duration of your stay according to your valid return ticket and your confirmed booking for accommodation.
The flight attendants will also hand out a second form for the health check. The Mauritian state wants to avoid new diseases to reach the country. Thus you will find questions about stays in yellow fever regions etc.
You will land on “Sir Sewoosagur International Airport”. This airport is to be found in the southeast of the island. Unlike in other countries, the Mauritian airport is not located near the capital Port Louis, but outside of the big towns. The airport is directly linked to the motorway. Like this you will reach your holiday destination quickly. It takes approximately a one-hour drive to go to Grand Bay in the North of Mauritius.
The arrival on Mauritius island is a wonderful experience for most visitors. Especially if you leave the cold European winter behind and approach the tropical island early in the morning. While the plane slowly descends you already have a fabulous view of the beautiful bays and the sight of the first palm trees makes the holiday maker’s heart beat faster. As soon as you leave the aircraft, tropical heat and humidity will surprise you, but will be accepted gladly. You might think “Oh, finally it is warm, the sun is shining and the sky is blue.” A smile appears on everyone’s face. On the airport you will be welcomed by the friendly and relaxed Mauritian personnel. Not without good reason, Mauritius is well-known for its hospitality and heartiness. Everybody feels welcome, like having reached home.
Having entered the airport, you will first pass trough passport control and a short health check. Now you will find the baggage claim area. If you are carrying any goods that have to be declared, please register at customs. The import of plants and foods is prohibited. You will find waste bins for their disposal on the airport. Living animals have to be in quarantine for 6 months before getting an admission to enter the country. As some medicaments are also banned on import, please make sure that you carry a prescription for them with you. Foreign currencies may be brought along, but must be registered at customs.
Only some steps after the customs you will reach the exit to the parking lot, where you will either be picked-up or can easily find a taxi to reach your holiday destination.
