There are two mobile phone networks: Orange and Emtel. You can use your mobile phone to do calls or to write text messages from those networks. Please be aware that those calls are quite costly due to the roaming fees. The receiver of your call or message has to pay as well. A cheaper way to communicate via mobile phone in Mauritius is the purchase of a starter pack (SIM card and credit) of a local network.

To reduce your telephone costs, you can also use calling cards (e.g. Sezam) to call from local phone booths. These offer quite cheap tariffs for calls abroad. The cards can be bought in supermarkets and souvenir shops.
